From May 20 to 27, the Town of Parker joined municipalities across the country in recognizing National Public Works Week and the positive impact the Parker Public Works Department makes in our community.

Since 1960, the American Public Works Association has sponsored National Public Works Week. Across North America, APWA’s more than 30,000 members use the week to energize and educate the public on the importance of public works to their daily lives: planning, building, managing and operating at the heart of their local communities to improve everyday quality of life.

For the Town of Parker’s participation, a fact about the Parker Public Works Department was shared each day of the week. Those facts are compiled below.

Fact 1: Did you know the Town of Parker’s Public Works Department has 175 on-road vehicles and pieces of equipment?

Fact 2: Did you know our Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining 35 roadway bridges and 534 lane miles of road within the Town.

Fact 3
Fact 3: Did you know that during an average year, the Public Works Department will go through 60,000 gallons of liquid deicer but in 2017, which had very light snowfall, we only went through 20,000 gallons? Fact 4: Did you know the Town of Parker Public Works Department maintains more than 333 detention ponds? Additionally, the department maintains more than 120 miles of storm pipe and more than 6,000 storm drains/inlets and manholes. While cleaning these storm drains, crews have removed keys, phones, and backpacks, rescued some baby rabbits and ducks, and even found a remote control car.

Fact 5: Did you know the Public Works Departments maintains 87 traffic signals including 13 on Parker Road for the Colorado Department of Transportation? The Department also manages 46 school zone flashing safety signs.

Fact 7: Did you know the Public Works Department’s Facilities Division takes care of over 30 facilities — accounting for approximately 440,000 square feet — around the Town?
