[ARCHIVED] Tips for Living with Coyotes

Coyote

Coyotes are a fact of life in the Parker area; they have adapted well to living in this environment and their numbers can’t be impacted over the long-term by attempts to control or reduce their population. Under State regulations, coyotes can’t be relocated to other areas. However, communities can safely coexist with coyotes if they are given the right tools. The following tips can help deter coyotes in your neighborhood:

Do not feed the coyotes, even unintentionally! This can make them less afraid of humans and potentially more dangerous. Never leave pet food or water outside as it can attract coyotes. Garbage should not be kept outside and should be placed in secure, tightly-sealed containers.

Take measures to protect your pets. Always supervise your pets outside, especially from dusk to dawn. Keep pets inside at night if possible. Walk pets on a short leash and never let them interact with wildlife. Pick up small dogs when coyotes are visible. If a coyote is too close or approaches you, scare or haze it away.

Educate your children about the presence of urban wildlife and teach them to NEVER approach wild animals or domestic animals they don’t know.

Report any incidents with coyotes. Parker residents should report coyote incidents immediately to the Animal Services Division at 303.841.9800. Safety is the Town’s highest priority and reports of coyote activity will be investigated and addressed according to the Town’s coyote management plan.
