[ARCHIVED] Meet Our Staff - Jim Gilbert

Meet Our Staff - Jim Gilbert

Two important areas of Parker’s Engineering and Public Works Department are the Facilities and Fleet Divisions. The Town has important investments in buildings and vehicles, and proper management and maintenance of these assets are important to ensuring good stewardship of public resources.

Meet Jim Gilbert, Fleet and Facilities Manager. Jim has a wealth of experience in fleet and facilities management and has done a great job overseeing these busy divisions in our organization since joining the Town just over two years ago. Take a few minutes to learn more about Jim and what he does for the Town of Parker!

How long have you worked for the Town of Parker? Where did you work before Parker?
“I began work with the Town of Parker in August 2016 as the Fleet and Facilities Manager. Prior to being a Town of Parker employee, I worked for the City of Thornton for almost 12 years in the same capacity. And before that I worked in the airline industry for almost 20 years, five of which were at Denver International Airport.”

Tell us about your job and how it impacts the Parker community.
“I oversee the Fleet and Facilities Division in the Engineering and Public Works Department. These two divisions are known as internal service providers. Our impact on the Parker community is widespread and, although behind the scenes, is essential to ensure the operational departments can provide services directly to the citizens.

“On the Fleet side of the operation, we maintain all of the Town’s equipment and vehicles. From the mowers and tractors used in the Parks and Forestry divisions, to the sweepers, plows and service equipment used by Public Works, to the Police vehicles, the Fleet Division makes sure the equipment can perform day in and day out.

“The Facilities team maintains the Town of Parker’s portfolio of buildings. This team ensures that the facilities and the associated equipment continue to operate as expected. Our areas of focus includes, but is not limited to, life safety items, HVAC, electrical and plumbing, custodial services, office and furniture movement, lighting, and capital improvements.

“I am blessed to lead these two divisions and fortunate to have a team of employees dedicated to providing the services in their respective areas.”

What do you most enjoy about working for the Town of Parker?
“I have lived in Colorado for 20 years. Being afforded an opportunity to perform this role in my home community provides me with a sense of belonging and purpose beyond having the skillset to ensure that the Fleet and Facilities operate consistently. I am looking forward to the continued development of our services and how I can be of service.”

What is your favorite thing to do in your free time?
My wife affectionately calls me “fun boy.” I have many hobbies that keep me busy outside of work.  These include riding motorcycles, flying radio controlled airplanes, fly-fishing, camping and hiking 14ers (I am planning at least two ascents this summer).”

What’s one thing that you feel sets Parker apart from other communities?
“Aside from what other staff members have mentioned about the culture of our Town and its staff, having a well-rounded set of strategic goals and incorporating them into our decision making. Although many communities have strategic goals, I see the Town of Parker emphasize their importance regarding our services and practices.”

What is the most interesting place you’ve ever visited?
“I would have to say either Niagara Falls or the Grand Canyon. Both of these locations are awe-inspiring.  From the amount of water flowing over the falls to the vast expanse of the canyon, both of these places present forces in nature that are unmatched.”

If you could do another job for the Town of Parker for just one day, what would it be?
“I would love to be Santa Claus in the Christmas Carriage Parade.  What other job brings so much joy to kids and adults alike? Besides, my beard is getting whiter every year…”
