Cherry Creek at KOA Stream Restoration Project

Cherry Creek at KOA Property Stream Restoration Project Map

The Town of Parker, in conjunction with the Mile High Flood District and the Cherry Creek Basin Water Quality Authority, is currently restoring a section of Cherry Creek adjacent to the McCabe Meadows trailhead and north of the KOA Tower property.

This section of Cherry Creek had experienced substantial erosion leading to unstable vertical banks, a reduction in riparian habitat and movement of sediment to the Cherry Creek reservoir. This project will stabilize the channel using a holistic approach to stream restoration:

  • The reclaimed stream will be raised up to eliminate the steep banks and provide water to the surrounding native vegetation.
  • A portion of the creek will be realigned to protect existing trees and vegetation while also improving flood conveyance.
  • The creek will be armored with rock protection and select vegetation to provide improved stability, water quality and habitat.
  • A segment of the small side channel will be enhanced to provide additional wetland habitat.

This project is currently under construction with substantial completion anticipated by the end of March with revegetation and wetland monitoring and adjustments continuing until fully reestablished. The Cherry Creek Regional Trail will remain open during the entirety of construction, and construction progress can be observed from the nearby pedestrian bridge.
