Floods can be caused by heavy storms, melting snow, or inadequate or overloaded drainage systems or even a broken water main. It is a misconception that you need to live by water or a drainageway (like Cherry Creek) to be flooded. Your mortgage lender will require you to buy flood insurance if you live within a designated floodplain by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). A floodplain is the area that encompasses a waterway or a stream to allow for water to safely travel its course without causing damage to neighboring facilities.
Parker participates in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), with a Community Rating of Grade 6, which means you can purchase fl ood insurance to protect your property against the hazard of flooding. This rating allows you to purchase flood insurance through your insurance provider for as little as $119 per year for a residential building and its content. A flood policy will pay covered losses even if a disaster is not declared
by the Governor or President.
