The Parker Town Council is excited to announce that the prestigious Solheim Cup golf tournament will be held Aug. 13-18, 2013 at the Colorado Golf Club. This means some incredible things for Parker as the event is anticipated to bring more than 100,000 people to our community for a week of activity in 2013. Tickets are already on sale and visitors from around the world, including the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands and Canada, are already making plans to attend.
Planned by the LPGA, the three-day Solheim Cup event is anything but a typical golf tournament! During this all women’s golf event, the Americans and Europeans will face off with a team approach to golf as they engage in match play, alternate shot, best ball and singles competitions. Team spirit is the name of this game and crowds will dress up, cheer loudly for their team and sing chants and songs during the matches. Spectators move as a group from hole to hole to see who will be the victor of the match. Two days of practice rounds are also open to the public prior to the start of the tournament.
More than 125,000 attended the 2011 event in Europe, where the trophy went to the Europeans. However, the American team has never lost on United States soil so the goal of winning back the Solheim Cup trophy will make the competition intense!
Look for more information in the upcoming months about how to get further involved in the tournament and the surrounding events and activities. This could include attending, sponsoring, volunteering or finding creative ways to maximize community involvement in this once in a lifetime experience. Local businesses are invited to get involved! Sponsorship packages are available and include tickets to the tournament. Interested parties should call Sara Crowe at 303.907.4452.
Solheim Cup is held every two years and alternates between Europe and the United States. The tournament was last played on American soil in 2009 just outside of Chicago. The Solheim Cup is named in honor of Karsten Solheim, the founder of Karsten Manufacturing Corporation, which makes PING golf equipment.
